How many electoral votes does each state have?
In the electoral college, each state gets one electoral vote for each of their members of the House of
Representatives and the Senate. There are 538 total electoral votes and a presidential candidate
needs 270 to win the election. For a breakdown of electoral votes in each state, visit the
Distribution of Electoral Votes at the
U.S. Electoral College site. The allocations are based on the 2010 Census, and they are effective for the 2012, 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.
